At tonight's meeting of the Southland Rugby Union the following motion . was unanimously carried: "That this union heartily approves of the notices 1 of motion to be brought forward by the Hawke's Bay Union at the annual general meeting of the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union in reference to alteration of the rules dealing with professionals; also cancelling affiliation to the English Union." It was resolved to instruct the Southland delegates to the annual meeting of the N.Z. R.U. to heartily support the measures. THE ASSOCIATION GAME. TARANAKI FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Taranaki Football Association was held at Eltham on Thursday last. Present: Rev. Stent (in the chair), Messrs. Foreman (Kaponga), Profit, Aroa, and Burke (Okaiawa), Hazeltine and Sterrott (Hawera), and Gwillim and Shepherd (New Plymouth). The secretary (Mr. W. Melville), in his j annual report, referred to the success of the past season, both as regards the finances and the game itself. At present there was a fair sum to the credit of the association, wliile the liabilities were nil. The game had advanced considerably. The teams competing had gained by two clubs, and the standard of football played had improved. Only one representative match liad eventuated. That was against Wanganui, at Hawera, when the home team were victorious by the margin of four goals to two. No team had been sent away to compete for the Brown Shield, the players not being able to get away to make the trip to Canterbury. The bal-ance-sheet, as adopted, showed receipts to have been £l3 2s lOd and the expenditure £5 12s, leaving cash in hand £7 10s lOd.
The election of officers resulted as fol-1 lows:—Patron, Hon T. Mackenzie; president, Hon. C. W. Carncros, M.L.C.; vicepresidents, Mr. H. Batts, Mr. W. Swad- I ling, Dr. Walker, Rev. Colvile, Father ) Bergen, Dr. Harrison, Mr. H. Bullock, 1 , Dr. Carberry; chairman, Rev. Stent; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. W.: Melville; hon. auditor, Mr. Campbell; vice-presidents to the N.Z.F.A., Hon. C. W. Carncross and Dr. E. A. Walker. Correspondence was read from the N.Z.F.A. stating that entries for the Brown Shield would close on May 1, and also notifying several alterations to the rules, regarding which the Taranaki Union had no report to make. , Okaiawa were admitted to membership of the union. VARIOUS RESOLUTIONS. Various resolutions were passed, as' follows:—(1) "That no team be allowed to play in the cup final unless the current season's affiliation fee be paid previous to that date; (2) that an executive committee be formed for the northern end from Eltham as centre, to New Plymouth northwards and same to Hawera. and surrounding district as the southern end, such committees to arrange fixtures, etc., and settle minor disputes subject to the approval of assembled union; (3) that, a committee be formed of Messrs. Gwillim, Shepherd and Rev. Stent to draft a set of rules for the union; (4) that the junior cup be open to schoolboy teams affiliated to the union." A hearty vote of thanks was accord.ed to the hon. secretary for his untiring energy, and for the able manneij which he had conducted the affairs of the union during the season—"his first as secretary. Votes of thanks to the press throughout Taranaki for reports of meetings and matches, and to the chairman for presiding, closed the meeting.
