TROUBLE ON THE OLYMPIC
A DESERTING CREW. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright London, April 24. The steamer Olympic, with 1400 passengers on board, was detained for an hour at Southampton through the firemen and stokers, deserting. They alleged that some of tli:> collapsible boats were unseaworthy. Mr. Curry, local manager for the 1 White Star Company, declared that all the boats had been officially examined and passed. Other firemen were engaged immediI ntely. I AN ECHO OF THE WREGK. COLLAPSIBLE BOATS. Received 26, 12.5 a.m. London, April 25. The Olympic was on the point of sailing when a number of firemen hurled their kits on to the quay by scores, and then surged for the gangway, demanding wooden lifeboats instead of collapsibles. The officers offered to demonstrate the seaworthiness of the collapsibles, but 295 left the ship. Pickets were posted on the dock and at the White Star Office. The Olympic has not sailed, and she is still without a complement of firemen. The sailors state that they are determined not to sail without union firemen.
