i THE AUSTRALIAN TOTALISATOR COMMISSION. By Cable—Prews Awoeisition—Copyright Received 22, 9.15 pan, Sydney, April 22. The Totalisator Commission has commenced taking evidence. The sporting reporters of two city papers were examined. Both strongly condemned women being allowed to bet. This they considered should be made illegal. Under the present system the bookmakers must win, as the odds were against the public. One expressed the opinion that the totalisator was a good thing for the public, but the other thought it increased betting, because it offered more advantages to the people to bet. Mr. Cropper, secretary of the Jockey Club, favored the totalisator from the Club's point of view. It would mean an increase of revenue. He thought it would not be an outside estimate to say that between six and seven million pounds would pass through the totalisator in New South Wales annually.
