THE SPEED OF THE CAR J ) By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N.. Friday. The inquest on the body, of Percy Field, the victim of the Loughurn motor | accident, was opened before Mr. A. D. , Thomson, S.M., coroner, and a jury, this . morning. ! The .llrst witness was Downes, the sta- , tionmaster, who was standing on the road with Field when the latter was I knocked down. He stated that neither/ saw the car till it was within ten paces j of them. Deceased jumped to one side - and. witness to the other, with the result that deceased was knocked down. Wit- . ness said that the car had two lights, [ which were not very bright, and he j thought they were kerosene. Deceased was carried about forty paces. Witness said that the driver informed him that the car was only going ten miles . j per hour, but he had replied that it | appeared to be nearer thirty miles. I . Both witness and deceased were sober. c l Witness admitted that both had had "1 twelve drinks each during the day, com- " mencing with four at 10.30 a.m., three at 1 1 dinner-time, three at 6.30, and two at " 1 9.45. 1 Palmerston N., Last Night. '' The inquest concerning the death of 6 Percy Field, the victim of the Long--1 burn motor accident, was concluded this afternoon. The jury returned a verdict ' that deceased met hs death as a result ' of a collision with a motor-car driven by J. W. Milner, and that even- reason-] < able precaution had been taken bv the' » driver, no blame being attachable to s anyone. e
