TARANAKI BANNER COMPETITION. WON BY IIAWERA. Oti the Stratford Club's green yester- ■ day afternoon, Hawera, winners of the southern and western sections, and New Plymouth, winners of the northern flection, met to decide the banner competiI tion. The day was fine, and the green, , considering the bad weather of the day before, was in fair order, though in some respects "tricky." Twenty-five heads were played, three rinks competing. Victory rested with tin* southerners by six points—l 74 points to 168. It was a fairly close game, the issue being in doubt right \\\ to the twentythird head. At the tea adjournment, Hawera had a load of five, points. A. H. Smart and H. Smart had a substantial lead, but S. Rundle was down to the tune of 29 to 10. This, however,! was not the result of indifferent play on the part of the northern rink, for in the majority of the heads they were holding their own, but Hawera got some "hatfuls," two sixes and a fiver going to them in rapid succession. After tea A. K. Smart saw his lead quickly diminish, Hicks, the opposing skip doing some effective work. The latter's ring scored three fives, and at the 23rd head they were but three behind. A good deal depended upon the next head, which gave no less than five to Hawera, and the match was over. The final head went to Smart. It was a meritorious performance on the part of the Ifawer.i men. 11. Smart held the advantage over bis opponent right through, scoring 24

to 13. R. Rundle, who was playing a good but "hard-luck" game, did better in the second half of the game, scoring nine to the other side's six. Still he suffered defeat by 35 to 10, hut had the consolation of knowing that he gained eleven of the 25 heads. The teams were hospitably treated by the Stratford men, who were heartily thanked at the conclusion of the match by Mr. Ab. Goldwater, on behalf of New Plymouth, and Mr. Foy, on behalf of Hawera. Felicitous references were also made regarding the play and its outcome, an exchange of cheers hringing an interesting and enjoyable afternoon to a close. Details of the scoring:— N.r. h. : A.
