TURF TOPICS.
(By "Moturoa").
Splendid nominations have been received for the winter meeting of the Egmont Racing Club, which will take . place on May 8 and 9. The open events j fairly (bristle with the names of good i performers, including Coromandel, Coro- , netted. Koran, Manawakaha, Lady Mens-j chikoff, Mendip, Crown Pearl, and others. The hack events have drawn the. smartest on the coast, and no fewer than 36 .are engaged in the Tawhiti Scurry, j Coronetted, ftlatapouri, Kauroa and Moa- . hau figure in the hurdle races, and if I there is a budding champion amongst these new aspirants to the jumping honors the presence of Cornelian and Sea--1 man will add zost to the contests. The | weights are not due until Friday week. The steeplechaser Beeline had a rocky time of it in the Autumn Steeplechase 'at Ellerslie. He was going well when his rider took the wrong course, and continuing on blundered and spread-eagled.. Over flat country the son of Captain Webb and Beeswing, should show to more advantage. Prince 'Soult pulled up well after win- j ning at Ellerslie on Monday week, and provided all goes .well, the'colt will be'i raced at the Manawatu and Hawke's Bay meetings shortly. «. Ma °A r l, P't"' who drojjped out of the A.R.C. Easter Handicap through striking himself, is now in steady workagain. ,
A northern paper states that Mark Ryan is positive 'that he won the Easter Handicap with Soultoria. The pictures oi the finish show Kakama well in front, so the only conclusion one van come to is that Mark looked at it out of the wrong eye. _ The steeplechaser Weibfoot -broke down in the Autumn Steeplechase, and will require a fairly lengthy spell before shming between the flags again. Another Aucklander, in the shape of Lloyds, came to grief at the same meeting. The horse took liberties with several jumps, and his stifles were cut about very hadlv.
'VVaipaku won the Manawatu Cup from end to end. and an attempt was made to | steal' the Great Autumn Handicap in 'the same way. Things like that only happen once in a racer's life-time, however and the Foxton horse was collared and .'beaten three furlongs from home
