COMPLAINT AGAINST THE RAILWAYS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Complaint was made to the Chamber of 'Commerce Committee to-day of what is considered unreasonable procedure on the part of the Railway Department with regard to charging overtime for work on the wharves, a recent alteration throwing upon shipping agents a larger share than the men receive for overtime pay. The grievance is felt the more, inasmuch as overtime is frequently made necessary through the inadequacy, of railway facilities to permit work to be completed in a day. Ship agents are paying their men while waiting for trucks or engines. The matter was referred to a sub-committee, for further enquiry.
LAND SETTLEMENT. Thnaru, Last Night. The applications for the Timaruaga settlement at Pareora were disappointingly small, only nineteen being lodged in Timaru. It is understood that there are only two or three in Christchurch, It is supposed that the rentals are too high. A SHEARING CASE. Timaru, Last Night. At Fairlie to-day a shearer who left the Omarama station after a rebuke fcy the overseer for ill-using sheep and demanding and being paid 76 per cent, of his wages, sued for £6 odd, balance du« for work done. Two justices gave judgment for the defendant, on the ground that the shearer had broken his contract.
