Mr. A, W. Gillies has announced his candidature for the Mayoralty of Hawera.
'Sir Allen Taylor has resigned the Lord Mayoralty of Sydney on the ground of ill-health.
Nurse Crosier, of the Auckland Hospital, is at present paying a visit to her friends in New Plymouth. Mr. E. A. Golding, musical director 'of the Empire Theatre, is at present an inmate of the hospital. It will be six weeks before he will be about again. On Saturday evoning Mr. H. Goldwater (who leaves shortly for Sydney) was presented by the members of the New Plymouth Club with a handsome smokers' outfit.
Mrs. C. Carter, who has jusl returned from a visit to England, was tendered a warm welcome at the Whitely Church Sunday School anniversary entertainment last evening.
The Eltham branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union has decided to recommend the Provincial Executive to accept the services of Mr. G. H. Buckridge as district organiser for the union. Mr. Buckridge has offered to perform these services gratuitously.
Cabinet has decided that the Ministerial residence in Molesworth Street shall be occupied by the Prime Minister (the Hon. T. Mackenzie); "Awarua," shortly to be vacated by Sir Joseph Ward, by the Hon. A. M. Myers; and the Tinakori Road residence (lately occupied by the Hon, J, A. Millar) by the Hon. G. Laurenson.
Sir Joseph Ward left Wellington for the south last night, accompanied by Lady Ward and Miss Ward. By way of compliment Jupp's Band played in the Awarua grounds and escorted him to thr; steamer, where Sir Joseph addressed a few words of farewell to those on the wharf. He will leave Christchurch hy the second express to-day for Dunedin, and will proceed to Invercargill on Wednesday, taking passage by the Ulimaroa on Monday. He will be away from Wellington about six weeks. There was a pleasant gathering of friends of Mr. Alick Alexander, of Moturoa, at the Grosvenor Hotel last night, to say goodbye to him prior to his leaving for an extended trip of the Old World. Mr. W. Birdling occupied the chair, and a bright and happy evening was passed with song, speech and story, not forgetting supper. During the evening Mr. Alexander was presented with a gold-mounted cigar-holder and a useful travelling rug as mementoes of the esteem in which he is held by his friends. Mrs. Alexander preceded him to England some months ago.
