Wilding, writing to a friend in Christchurch regarding criticism on his absence in the Davis Cup contests, says that when he promised to come to New Zealand he had no idea that from June, 1911, he .was to be a member of a large firm in the City of London. Under the circumstances he could not ask leave to make an extended visit to New Zealand. From June to February he had not played tennis.
