THE WOOLLEN MILLS AWARD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. The chairman of the Wellington Woollen Company states .that the Arbitration Court award* in the mill dispute is unlikely to have any serious effect on New Zealand' 3 woollen industry. Although some increases are granted, nothing like the original demands of the union have been given. PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. Wellington, Yesterday. In reply t<s a deputation of timber workers, Mr. Laurenaon said he supported statutory preference to unionists. THE SHEARERS' CONFERENCE. Wellington, Yesterday. The shearers' conference decided to establish a head office in Wellington not later than September 1.
THE WESTPORT DEADLOCK. Westport, Last Night. The deadlock at the Westport Coal Company's Deniston mines continues. Attempts to come to an amicable settlement to-day proved abortive. The men mention that firemen have been employed for the last four or five years, and it has only latelv been decided to do away with them. Tlier consider it unsafe for a man to be charge of engines at night, with no one else in attendance. An-' other meeting is being held to-morrow. Mr. Dowgray, one of the executive of the Federation of Labor, is proceeding to Denniston in the morning to try and arrive at an amicable settlement of the matter in dispute.
