EASTER TOURNAMENT. FAVORABLE CONDITIONS AND GOOp : PLAY. ' " The first stage of the New Plymouth >Golf Club's Easter tournament commenced on Saturday morning under "happy auspices. Ideal weather prevailed and the liruks, especially the putting greens, were in a surprisingly good condition. The number of entries constituted a record, and the standard of play, as the tallies showed, was much higher than that of previous years. This year a new departure has been introduced, as a result of which instead of giving orders the club will give trophies. These will be .presented this afternoon. Another pleasing feature was that all the events were earried out in good time. Saturday's programme comprised two qualifying rounds of 18 holes, a teams match, and a medal handicap over 36 holes. HAlvLuuew.' -MATCH. The handicap match was won by R. Albbott, with 147, E. S. Bayley being second with 156. Results:—

O'Oallaghan H>7, H. H. Ward 169. SECOND DAY'S PLAY. The weather conditions were anything but favorable on the links yesterday, but nevertheless play kept well up to standard. In all, 53 competitors braved tlie elements. TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP. J. O. Burns beat G. Saunders; W. O'Callaghan (beat R. Abbott; W. Colbeck beat J. Ritchie; (!. Saunders beat H. H. Ward. In the semi-final ..T C. Burns beat W. O'Callaghan; AY. B. Colbeck beat G. Saunders. The final will be played this morning, commencing about 11 o'< !®ck. BOGEY HANDICAP. This match was jvon by A. Bewley, 3 up, with a handicap of 2. The following tied for second place:—! 1 . V. Mackay (handicap 9), A. A. Stewart (7), F. S. Johns ('2), W. P. Nicoll (11), all square. This morning a bogey handicap will be started at 8.45 o'clock. The final for the championship will be started aJbout 11 o'clock, and the pairs best ball bogey handicap early in the afternoon. At the conclusion of the tournament the trophies will be presented to the winners of the various events.
