SCHOOL PICNIC

AT HILLSBOROUGH.

The annual picnic of the children attending Hillsborough School took place on Thursday, and was a complete suclcess._ The children were well catered for in the amusement line, and each re'ceived a prize or toy of some description. The half-mile race (open) was won by C. Hamblyn. During the afternoon the proceedings were enlivened for the adults by a cricket match. The Egmont Village eleven failed to put in an appearance, with the result that a "scra-teh" game was played, one. team scoring 40 and the other 45 runs. J. R. Hill, who gave a taste of the form he is in for the councillors' match on the New Plymouth Recreation Ground on Monday afternoon, batted for both Bid«, Ma totals being 10 and 12 runs respectively. The "fun" was prolonged until a late hour, the day being wound up with a concert and dance. During the evening attendance prizes to the value of £l6 were distributed to school children as follows:—For not missing once during the year ended December: Rina Thomason, William Snellie, Kathleen, Grace, Alfred and Ivan Hamblyn. For not being albsent more than five halfdays: Leonore, John and Myrtle Sampson, and Daisy Marsh. A programme of musical items was contributed to by Mrs. Ingley, Misses Stewart, I. Hook and the. Misses White (of New Plymouth) Messrs. Keenan and F. Barribal. The accompaniments were played by Misses Stewart, White and Scandlyn. Action songs were also given by some of the school children. An excellent supper was provided.
