The defence raised the point that proceedings could not be taken until the expiration of the statutory year. Th'j magistrate upheld the point and dismissed the cases. Harry Holland, a Socialist leader, was then charged with preventing his son from rendering personal service. The magistrate considered the offence serious and fined Holland £IOO.
