GENERAL TELEGRAMS

NEW TOWN HALL FOE DANNEVIRKE. By Telegraph—Press Assoeiatiwa, Dannevirke, Last Night. The new brick Town Hall was opened by Lord Islington this afternoon. The building was designed by the Hon. W.' Pitt, of Melbourne, and will seat about one thousand people. The work cost £II,OOO, including the installation of electric light, which was carried out by Mr J. H. Fairhurst, the contractor, who was given a gold watch by the Council in appreciation of the faithful manner in which the work had been carried out. Lord Islington to-night attended a performance by the local amateurs of "H.M.S. Pinafore," and afterwards left by special train for Wellington.

THE UNION COMPANY'S SHARES. Dunedin.Last Night. When asked to-night if he could assign any reason for the sudden advance in the shares of the Union Steam Ship Company, Mr. Holdsworthy, the company's general manager, replied in the negative. It is understood, however, that the denial given in May last to the report that an amalgamation between the Union Company and the New Zealand Shipping Company was projected, still holds good.
