An Adelaide telegram reports the death of Mr. Justice Homburg. Dr. Bennett, of Blenheim, is on a short visit to New Plymouth. A London cablegram reports the death of the Marquis of Hertford, and Mr. Jas. Coats, jr., thread manufacturer. The death is reported of Mrs. W. Monk, formerly of New Plymouth and Bell Block, and recently of Hokitika, Westlsnd. Foreman Partington, of the local Fire Brigade, has been presented with a twoyears' service bar, on his completing 17 years' service. The Gazette notifies that Mr. W. L. Wagstaff, of the Central School staff, has obtained special mention in the subject of dairying at the January examination for Class C. Music lovers in New Plymouth will regret to learn that Mr. Philip Newbury, the famous tenor, has found it im si possible to fulfil his engagement.here oh Thursday evening, owing to' having an acute attack of lumbago. His medical advisers will not allow him to travel at present. He will, however, visit New Plymouth as soon as expedient. The Taranaki Garrison Band held a. social gathering last night in the Piccadilly Rooms, when occasion was taken to present Drum-Major King, who is leaving for Australia shortly, with a framed photograph of the band as a memento of esteem. The gathering took the form of a smoke concert. An enjoyable musical programme was gone through, songs being rendered by Messrs Nippert, Pellew, Chivers, Home, Coleman, and Coulthart, and recitations by Messrs Leng and Gaylard. Bandmaster Cummins, who presided, made the presentation, referring to the interest that the guest had always taken in the band's welfare, and the regret experienced by all at his departure.
