(Conducted by "Eileen.") SOCIETY NEWS. Garden l'arty. —Tlie garden party j postponed from last week eventuated on j Thursday afternoon in the lovely gardsns of "Overdale," Mr. E. Cock's handsome residence. Generally when an event is postponed, the ardour of the 1 public is damped, but to this fete fell the exception (probably the unforseen pessimist has arranged smiling possibilities for second events; if so, oh, Now Plymouth, great is thy fate! ! !). Delicious afternoon tea was served in the dining-room and verandah, and while meandering round the grounds one was accompanied by strains of sweet music discoursed by the Garrison Band. Amongst those present were:—Mrs.. E. Cock, lettuce green flowered muslin, black feathered toque; Mrs. Doile, cream costume; Mrs. Drew, white embroidered muslin, hat massed with pink roses; Miss Evans, black, relieved with cream lace, hat trimmed with heliotrope; Mrs. G. List, cream voile, bodice profusely tucked and finished with a silken girdle, whife straw hat with roses; Mrs. D. White, tussore silk faced with black; Mrs. Burton, black and- white striped muslin, white lace yoke, hat en suite; Miss Howell, white embroidered muslin, saxe blue hat wreathed with pink roses; Mrs. J. Avery, cinnamon brovVß taffeta, pretty bonnet lightly touched with pale pink; Mrs. S. Cottier, saxej blue costume, black hat relieved with pale pink roses; M rs - Lewis Webster (Stratford), silver grey voile, trimmed with cream lace, black feathered hat; Mrs. J. PERSONAL ITEMS. Miss Teresa McEnroe is the guest of Mrs. F. Henderson, St. Aubyn street. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Burgess have been on a short motor trip to Wellineton. Mrs. H." Stocker "left last Thursday for Wellington, where she will be met by her ihother, Mrs. Fred' Webster; and from thence they will journev to Sydney, remaining there about three months. Mrs. and Miss Devenish left on Wellington for Blenheim, where they, will be the guests of, Mr. and Mrs. w". Skinner. , Miss Fabian, of the local telephone exchange, is at present at Auckland, relieving Miss Brett, who is at New Plymouth for a time. Still another engagement is rumored, so evidently Cupid works more than; the legal eight hours a day, or else his | markmanship is improving, viz., Miss Lulu McAllum, of this town (but-at present a nurse in Hamilton hospital) to Mr. Dickself, of Te Kuiti.
