At, a well attended meeting presided over by the Acting-Mayor* (Mr. John Smith) to-night, an Early Settlers' and Historical Association of Wellington was formed, with the object of collecting relics of early settlement and records df the history of the province. DEPRESSION IN SOUTHLAND. Invercargill, Last Night. Mercantile matters are fairly quiet in Invercargill just now, and a good deal of anxiety is bein| expressed regarding the possible financial stringency. Some firms are not pushing business with the keenness appareht a few months back, and deals are not looked upon with favor unless the buyers have an assured position. Money is tight and most of the financial institutions are making no secret of the fact. Deals in property both in the town and the country hjave, it is said, fallen off greatly, and altogether there seems to be a feeling that the time is ripe for extreme caution. THE AUCKLAND EXHIBITION. Auckland, Last Night. The Exhibition executive met to-day arfd fixed the date for the opening of the exhibition December 1, 1013. It was decided to ask the Government for & cash grant of . £2OOO. Lists of prospective guarantors were distributed, and the committee hopes to have £SOQO guaranteed within a week. It wjas decided that any surplus should be spent on improving the outer Domain, where the exhibition .is to be held. SHERWOOD DOWNS ESTATE. Timaru, Last Night. The ballot fo;r the Sherwood Downs station sub-divisions took place to-day. There were 323 applicants for 16 farms and 10 grazing runs. Seventeen South Canterbury applicants were successful, the others being from North Canterbury and Otago. The homestead fell to E. S. Forbes, of Waihao Downs. The deposits with, applications totalled £29,000.
