i * I Stratford, Friday. 1 MAGISTRATES COURT. Mr. Konrick, S.M., had very little actual business to transact to-day, most of the debt cases having been either settled out of court or the summonses not served, while three or four plaints were adjourned. Judgment by default was given for plaintiffs ill the following cases:—R. H. Bright (Mr. Fookos) v. W. Adamson, claim £1 12s, costs ss: S. H. James (Mr. Fookes) v. W. Eyles, claim £1 9s 9d, costs ss; R. Hannah and Co. (Mr. Thomson) v. A. A. Cuthbertson, claim £2 10s Gd, costs 10s Thomas Waite (Mr. Wright) sued William Dowman on a judgment summons for £8 12s 2d. The defendant, in examination, made it very clear that he had not been in a position to pay the debt up to the present, sickness being the chief cause. He offered, however, to pay £2 per month, and an order was made accordingly. An order was refused in the judgment summons case F. Plumtree (Mr.' Wright) v. J. Christiansen, claim £1 9s 9d. Tho. S.M. called the attention of the de : fendant to the manner in which the j costs wfere accumulating, and strongly advised him to use every effort to pay a little off whenever he could. The J debtor said he would if possible, as he ' did not desire to cheat any man. Solomon Cook, of Wanganui, sued E. H. Finchman, of Toko, for the sum of £2 ss, balance said to be due on a suit of clothes. The case was set down at Wanganui. and the defendant's evidence was taken here to be forwarded on.' It amounted to this: He absolutely denied I the liability. Did not know plaintiff, and had never ordered a suit of clothes from -him or instructed anyone else to Ido so. It was, he said, a case of mis- | taken identity.

D. Sole, of this town), who broke her thigh at Hunterville a short time ago, is making a. rapid recovery. Two judgment summons cases were h 9 a rd in court to-day, both of which aroused sympathy for the debtors, -inasmuch as illness as much as anything else on the part of the breadwinners was responsible for their failure to meet their liabilities. In one case the S.M» said it was impossible for him to make an order under the circumstances, with which the solicitor for the plaintiff concurred', and the other he would have treated the same way had not the judgment debtor made an offer to pay the | amount sued for in monthly instalments, ajs he had better prospects than for many months past.-
