Mr. R. C. Esse, manager of the Bank of iew South Wales, Waverley, left on Wednesday for a visit to England. Mr. A. W. Hood, until recently licensee of the Eahotu Hotel, is taking over the Tariki Hotel early next month from Mrs. Miller, who will probably take over the Railway Hotel at Eltham'. The Rev. J. W. Burton, who has already written a book on Fiji, has received! advice that /another of his works, "The Call of the Pacific," has been accepted by a London firm of publishers. A Wellington wire states that Mr. John P. Puttick, of Oamaru. has been elected as representative of the second division of the Railway service on the Government Railways Superannuation Fund Board. There were 18 candidates. Mr. Percy Sole (son of Mr. Gus Sole) a&id Mr. G. Bond left New Plymouth yesterday for an extended holiday in Australia. While there Mr. Sole intends to exploit the horse market with a view of taking over a number of animals from Taranaki at a later date. Miss A. E. Whittaker, who is leaving the service of the Borough Council after six years' association with its clerical staff, was yesterday presented with a silver teapot. Mr. F. T. Bellringer made the presentation on behalf of the staff. Miss Whittaker was also the recipient of a presentation from the electric lighting staff. _ A. Press-Association wire from Wellington announces that Mr. John Strauchon, Surveyor-General, is to succeed Mr. W. C. Kensington as UnderSecretary for Lands when the latter retires at an early date, and that Mr. I James McKenzie, Commissioner of Crown lands at Wellington, is. to be th« new Surveyor-General. On,, the retirement of Mr. E. L. Mowbray, accountant to the Treasury, on the;<3lst inst., Mr. A. S. Gibbes, now Chjef Clerk, will become Accountant, and Mr. J. J. Essoh will be promoted to be Chief Clerk. Mr. John McLean, of Caroline, Southland, has been appointed a member of the Board of Land Purchase Commissioners under the Land for Settlements Act.
