HIGH SCHOOL BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. Yesterday's meeting of the New Plymouth High School Board of Governors was attended by the chairman (Mr. N. K. MacDiarmid), and Messrs. Fraser, H. Eyre-Kenny, D. Hutchen and E. Dockrill. j HIGH SCHOOL AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE. 1 With, a view to avoiding as far as possible overlapping as between day] technical and secondary schools, the In-spector-General of Schools (Mr. G. Hogben) wrote to the board on the matter. The Inspector-General's communication had special reference to the recently established system of day classes at the New Plymouth Technical College. He desired to know (1) what facilities the curriculum for the current year offers in the way of instruction, (a) suitable for commercial pursuits, (b) in domestic 1 subjects, and further a list of the subjects in which instruction is given and the number of hours a week given to each subject; (2) if the governors propose to modify the curriculum in the near future with the view of providing definite course of commercial and domestic instruction. Mr. Hogben added that the Department understood that the staff of the school included a teacher qualified to give instruction in domestic subjects, i In a report to the board, covering the J Inspector-General's letter, the Principal of the High School, Mr. W. H. Moyes, M.A., stated that the Technical School had applied for recognition of day classes, but as some of the subjects on its curr|«xlum were also on that of the High School, it was possible that the Department would not sanction them. Regarding the commercial course, Mr. Moyes remarked that no Buch course was at present established in the High School, though it was his wish that one should be included in the curriculum next year. In the near future there should be room for three courses in the High School, viz., classical course, (2) agricultural course, and (3) commercial course. The matter was not discussed. The Crown lands ranger's report on the reserves under the board's control was referred to its solicitor to take action where necessary. Accounts amounting to £305 17s 6d were passed for payment, including salaries £lB9 15s.
