AFTERNOON SHIFT CONFERENCES. By Cable—Press Association—Copyrigkt. Newcastle, March 20. The conference mutually agixed that the question of the abolition of the afternoon shift be referred to the Conciliation Committee for final treatment, each side appointing two extra members to the committee while the question is being considered. The joint committee will consider the matter to-day and both parties have agreed to abide by its decision. CONFERENCE ADJOURNED. Received March 20, 9.40 p.m. Sydney, March 20. J The Conciliation Committee informally discussed the afternoon shift question, and then adjourned till Tuesday. ENGINEDRIVERS IN MINES.Sydney, March 20. The executive of the Federal Council of the Enginedrivers and Firemen's Federation has instructed members working in pits in the Newcastle district that m the event of the miners ceasing work the enginedrivers and firemen continue so long as they are not called on to do the work of strikers or use non-union eoal. THE BRISBANE STRIKE. STRIKERS NOT DISCONTENTED. Received March 21. 12.45 p.m. Brisbane, March 20. Mr. Coyne, speaking at Movven, declared that the ex-tramwaymn;i occupied better positions than they held in the tramway service. He did not know one discontented striker. The Commissioner of Railways denied this. He stated that three hundred strikers were seeking re-employment on the railways. Some made pathetic appeals and expressed regret at striking.
