ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FATALITY ON A DREDGE. By Telegraph—Press Association, Westport, Tuesday. ; A man named George Roberts was killed on the Junction gold dredge on the Buller river. He was oiling the machinery, when he got caught in the shaft.
SHOCKING INJURIES. Auckland, Last Night. An accident occurred at the pumice works at Ohinewai, causing shocking injuries to the manager, Thomas Smith. He was pulling a truck of coal to the works with the aid of a horse, when he tripped and fell. The truck, which was heavily laden, passed over him, almost severing one leg, mangling the other, 1 and crushing his arm. He had the right leg amputated above the knee, the left (leg amputated! half-way betweeni the knee and the ankle, and the left arm between the wrist and elbow. His condition is critical.
A RIDING FATALITY. Napier, Last Night. The Taupo correspondent of the Hawke's Bay Herald telegraphs a very sad accident occurred at 'the Loch Inver station yesterday, when Miss Alice Carswell, the daughter of James Carswell, the manager, was killed while riding. /
CHILD RUN OVER. Dunedin, Last Night. A fatal accident occurred at Port Chalmers shortly before 1 p,m. to-day, the victim being Martha Lockhart Methers, aged five years. She and some other children were returning to school %H the conclusion of the dinner 'hour, when she was run over by a spring cart which was proceeding slowly at the time. The child's skull was fractured at the base and one arm appeared to be broken. It appears that' when the child saw the horse and cart coming she retracted her steps and ran under the horse's feet.
