REV. J. J. CHAPMAN'S HETERODOXY.
I To the Editor. Sir,—Having seen a letter in your paper upon the above subject by your correspondent, "Upholder of Truth," I would like the opportunity to reply. "Upholder of Truth" is beside the mark. It really means upholder of any strange notions that a man may conceive about Bible-teaching, and the declaration of the same. Mr. Chapman's heterodoxy is true enough; of that I have been satisfied for the last three years. The Minister who devotes himself to discover some new theories which will be more palatable and interesting to a gain-say-ing people is false to his calling. "Upholder of Truth" commends Mr. Chapman for having the courage of his convictions. Alas! for such like courage. Judas Tscariot had some courage of that sort. I am persuaded that Mr. Chapman has got a lot of dissolving views. Mr. Chapman's teaching is decidedly pernicious; he does not expound God's truth, but confuses it, bringing it into contempt. I consider that Christian people are foolish to listen to such a man. They are bound to receive more harm than good. God's declarations are distasteful to Mr. Chapman, hence his desire to discover new theories. Mr. Chapman is in the position of a ship without an anchor.—T am. etc., JAMES FORTUNE. [We have taken the liberty of excising some objectionable passages from the above. —Ed.]
