EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Egmont County Council was held on the Bth inst., when there were present: Crs. Campbell (acting chairman), Hurst, Harvey, Burgess, Farquhar and Willcox. Foreman F. Newport (Rahotu Northern) reported on work done between Puniho and Oaonui, raking up loose •tones, cleaning inlets and outlets to culvert and clearing water-tables. He had *l»o loaded the metal approaching on to bridges where necessary, thus doing away with the jarring that existed. He also asked for an additional 400 yards of metal on his length, and asked the Council to grant him an increase to 10s per day, pointing out that casual laborers were now getting 9s per day.—The in«rease in wages was refused. The reouest for metal was held over, Cr. Farquhar objecting that 400 yds extra was a big order, seeing tliat a commission had reported on the quantities required. Cr. Willcox said that when the estimates were framed they had not taken into consideration the damage that would be done by ateam traction. Foreman T. Humphries (Rahotu Southern)! reported that he had been repairing the Main South road. The Eltham road had also been repaired. He required timber to repair a small bridge near Opua road. Tenders were dealt with as follows: Supply and delivery 150 yards shingle, Opunake-Stratford road, Oeo riding (northern), G. Kehely, 6g fid per cubic yard (accepted). Supply and delivery 2fo yards crushed boulder stone, Main South road, Rahotu riding, W. H. Couser 4» 4d (accepted), G, Vickers 4s sd, J. Hickey ss. The estimates for the Patiki road wer« then considered. They were (1) an 18ft road, crushed metal 12ft wide and lOin deep, and 'blinded. The cost of this would be £ll per chain, or a total of £2354; (2) the same formation as above but with boulder stone, hand-broken, to a width of lift and a depth of Bin, blinded. The cost of this would be £8 5s 6d per chain, or a total of £1770 17s. To either of these estimates must be added £l5O for putting in order the remainder of the road; also £250 for constructing side-tracks. A brief discussion led to the adoption of the No. 2 scheme, and the chairman undertook to secure the necessary signatures to enable a loan to be be raised on this part of the district, and to report at next meeting. The Government Insurance Department asked for a share of the Council's aacident business. The Public Works Department wrote giving particulars of the storage of explosives at stone quarries under the provisions of the Act.
The secretary of the Pihama Sports Committee wag granted permission to fence the lower end of the road leading to the Recreation Grounds for the daj of the sports. The Department of Lands and Survey, New Plymouth, wrote informing the Council that the Land Board had approved of the expenditure of the thirds accrued to the amount of £2 13s Id as suggested, and the amount had been passed for payment. The Public Works Department informed the Council that the sum of £l5O was authorised for the Wiremu road (Kiri road to Ihaia road)i. ■Accounts amounting to £524 were passed for payment.—Abridged from Times.
