HOT MINERAL WATER.

BORING OPERATIONS AT HANMER. Christchurch, Mareh 11. Boring operations at Hanmer Springs lop- a further supply of hot mineral water have been suspended pending the arrival of material from Sydney. The hqstt made at the spot near the cold swimming bath indicated by the Rev. H. Mason was not a success. Mineral water was present, but the temperature was too low, 86 degrees, and the quantity was not sufficient to warrant further operations. A bore is now to be made at a third spot indicated by Mr- Mason to the north of the first bore. On the recommendation of the contractor (Mr. R. W. Home), the pipes first sunk were withdrawn, and perforated for a distance of 15 feet up from the bottom before being redriven. This has had the effect of increasing the flow to 30 gallons per minute, which, with the existing supply, brings the quantity of water available for bath purposes up to 42,000 gallons a day. At present the bulk of this flow is going to waste, but no doubt when the boring has been given a thorough test steps will be taken to conserve the overflew, and pipes will be laid to carry it to the present cold swimming bath.
