ENTERTAINMENTS

,i ■■■ JOSEPH BLASCHECK ; f) ; ; Mr. Joseph Blascheck in private Yd* is a quiet, unassuming little man. . H», delights to haunt the picture galleries and second-hand book shops. Nothing: gives .him greater pleasure up bargains in the shape of - b*oks r . poetry, drama and biography befog his ' favorite literature. It i» said to ( .bp almost impossible to conceive that; •->this quiet, unobtrusive individual, little to say, could be the same man who on the platform, generally raises' his" audience to enthusiasm. tains audience actually seems,.it is cil<ei|iied (by the power of his acting) to be the living embodiment of the ridiculous old J.P., Shakespeare's Mark Anthony, Chivelier's "Fallen Star," a dodderittg old yokel, a merry schoolboy, and' operatic vocalist, a comic lover, or any of the hundred totally dliferent characters, he pourtiays. Mr. Blascheck is to ..open at the Theatre Royal on -Tuesday night next, 19th inst. The box plan is at. Collier's. V BARTON'S CIRCUS. t It is customary to expect a similarity;. in circuses—''they are 1 always the'sajiU,"" it is said, but Barton Bros, last'night showed that they had got out of theruck and could provide an evenirigTentertainment that could be both novel and interesting. The.variety was ex-' I tensive also, ranging from a jiu-jitatt'-|,bout to selections on the hand : bells, ■ and the crowded tent shewed'; its appreciation by its continuous applafise. The "star" items of the evening wire those <of Mounier and Franz, the Roman gladiators. These two< men< showed* strength extraordinary, and handled bar-bar-bells of weights nip to 8601 baa though they were but a few ounces. They gave an exhibition of muscular development also, showing the high cultivation of their muscles. Their concluding act was to support a heavy motorcar driven over them—an extraordinary feat of strength. The acrobatic wife was entirely new, and the acrobat* he ' surely "out on their own." One oftififcr ' • turns was for one man to hang from the - trapeze by his legs whilst his, mate: pjrformed various evolutions on a t'rapfie held by his teeth. The "musical Tie- • vares" were very clever, performing In various quaint instruments, besides the' hand-bells. Some of the effects produced were very sweet. The lady trick cyclist seemed 'capable of doing' whatever she willed with the bicycle, ridingon it backwards, frontwards and sidewards, and appealing to the audience '' by her cleverness. The same lady gavea performance on the steel rope, and was quite as successful as in her other clever performance.- The trained horses seemed as if they could do all but talk, so per- ' fectly taught' were they. The ladder act >was an interesting performance, two "alleged- 1 ape© acting on a revolving lad- 1 ■ der and creating roars of laughter. Clown, Dummy and Co. provided plenty of merriment of a clean order. The..local steeplechase at the conclusion provided I plenty of interest./ The band cannot be'; overlooked, for the musieal wirt of .the v performance was certainly a feature. , The circus gives a final performance to* ni»ht, and we can recommend it.to (hfise who could not attend last night.. : ———i . vO* "OVERDALE" GARDEN PARTY. 1 The garden party organised by the Park Tennis Club takes place at "Overdale" this (Thursday) afternoon* Elaborate preparations have been made tocope with a large attendance, and many side-shows have been provided to keep the_ visitors entertained. Guessing competitions of various kinds, bran tubs, quoits, Aunt Sally, bowls, fortune tell-1 ing, shying, instantaneous photographv and motor-car rides will be carried out by their various committees. The sweets, ice cream and produce stalls will have a specially fine display, while "a work stall, for which the ladies hav'ffl been working for the past few months* will'be a centre of attraction. The Gam rison Band will render an attractive prorf gramme. ■ • - j
