LICENSING ELECTIONS

GISBORNE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. Gneat interest was shown in the Gisborne licensing election. The results were:—Dewing (liquor) 755, Hepburn (liquor) 723, Somervell (prohibition) 654, Darton (prohibition) 577, McLeod (prohibition.) 555. All were members of the old committee. The other candidates were: Coleman (labor) 397, Hall (labor) 336, and Beer (independent) 285. Four outlying booths have yet to come, but cannot affect the result. WAIRAU. Blenheim, Last Night. Very little interest was taken to-day■ in the poll for the licensing bench. Out of over 6000 voters, the highest polled by any one candidate was 678. Three of the old committee wer© re-elected, and two new members. One old member was defeated. TEMUKA AND WAITAKI. Timaru, Last Night. The Temuka and Waifcaki licensing committee elections went against temperance tickets. A LADY ELECTED. Wellington, Last Night. The unusual situation of, a licensing committee being required in a no-lieense electorate was created in Wellington Suburbs by_ the changed electoral boundary bringing in two hotels, one at Porirua and another at Pahatanui. In the ordinary course of law these hotels must disappear , in July, but the New Zealand Alliance, as the result of ,an agitation to secure the retention contested the 'election of the licensing committee! winning all the seats with its nominees. The result was as follows: W. Cook 524, H. N. McLeod 523, LibM. Atkinson 506, C. Cathie 402. J. Reith 480, One return to come will not affect the result. The committee will probably held but one meeting, as licenses lapse on June SO. HUTT. Wellington, Last Night. The result of the election of a licensing committee for Hutt district was too incomplete to-night to show definitely who were elected, but the probabilities are that Cotton, Ryder, Cuddy, Stevens and Welsh will be the five leading candidates. A break occurred in the telegraph lines between the Upper and Lower Htitt and no provision had been made to keep telegraph offices open after 8 o'clock, so returnf have yet to come from the Upper Hutt, Wallacevilie, Wainuiomata, Muritai, and Taita. Results so farCotton 594. Ryder 505, Cuddy 476. Stevens 448, Welsh 432. Short *426, Ewan 422, Waugh 361. The first four were members of the old committee, the fifth member of which died recently. NELSON. . .' Nelson, Last Night. The licensing committee election resulted in the return the moderateticket. In the first three places the nolicense party, secured one seat. DUNIDIN.

Dunedin. Last Night. The licensing committee elections in the City and Dunedin South did not attract a preat deal of attention to-day. In the City only about 8900 people out of some 29.000 on the roll exercised their vote. Candidates were nominated by the temperance and moderate, parties, and the following were elected: W. Barrett, W. Belcher and T. J. Sullivan (moderate), and G. Calder and A. H. Burton (temperance). In Dunedin South the following were- elected: Messrs. Marlow, Cuttle and Burke (moderate), and Fillis and Wright (temperance).

CHRISTCHURCn AND RTCCARTOX. Hiristpf ureh. Last Night. For the Cliristohnvch Licensing Committee four temperance ticket candidates were returned and one independent. Eight hundred and seventy informal votes were east, due to too many narnes being left. , In Riecnrton, where the contest was keenest, owing to the intention of the temperance party to veto conditional licenses in connection with racing and trotting meetings and the agricultural show, the moderate party was successful by an overwhelming majority.
