Mr.'J. Strauchon, Surveyor-General. ia visiting this district. The death is announced of Mr, John Dow, J.P., of Newtown, Outram, in his eightieth year. A Westport telegram reports the death, at the age of 30, of Mr. G. L. Hercus, director of the Westport School of Mines.

The death is announced of Mr. Joseph Milverton, an old and highly esteemed resident of ralmerston Xortli, at the age of 80 years. Mr. T. Harris Giles, Conciliation Commissioner, will be in New Plymouth this week to preside at the hearing of the Taranaki carpenters' and joiners' dispute.

Mr. M. J. Bloomfield, general manager for the London, Entertainments Syndicate, arrived in town yesterday to make arrangements for the first' appearance in New Plymouth of Mr. Joseph Blascheek. the famous humorist, and Miss Mildred Wrighton, Mt. Blascheek opens his entertainment on Tuesday - next for one night only. A cablegram from Sydney last night reports that Mrs. and Miss Setldon, who are returning from England, will remain in Sydney until Saturday, when they leave for New Zealand. Mr. T. Seddon will remain in Melbourne for a few 'days. During their stay they will be entertained by the Hon. Andrew Fisher, P. 0., Federal Premier, and other Ministers.

There died at Temuka on Sunday (states a Timaru wire) a pioneer settler named Mrs. Margaret Hornbrook, aged 84, who arrived in Wellington in 1841, and went south in 1854. She wag the' first white woman to land at Timaru, and her eldest son was the first white child born in South Canterbury, She was the widow of Mr. Wm. Hornbrook, who, with his brother, Major Hornbrook, took up the Arowhenua run. In 1904 deceased leased the farm, and hag since lived in Temuka. She leaves three sons and three daughters.
