APPEAL AGAINST INCOME TAX. By Telegraph —Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. Mr. Justice Williams gave: judgment in the case, Dalgety and others, appellants, versus Commissioner of Taxes, an appeal from the decision of the magistrate in over-ruling objections ■' to their assessment >of income for income tax purposes. The question was what were the profits derived. by appellants from the holding or occupation of Crown lands for the year ending 31st March, 1910, which was the last year that appellants carried on and during which they held a clearing sale. The judge held that the exception contained in the subsection could not be constructed as an exception to prohibition from deduction. The appeal was dismissed with costs £lO. GIFT TO DOMINION'S DREADNOUGHT. Timaru, Last Night. The committee which arranged the gift from the Dominion to the battleship New Zealand met this afternoon to consider a letter from the Admiralty inquiring whether, as the name of the ship which received the gifts had been changed to Zealandia and a new ship given by the Dominion was named New Zealand, the gifts should be transferred to the latter. The committee decided to reply that they desired the transfer to be made, but not until the expiry of the present commission of the ZeaI landia.
