THE TERRITORIALS THE MEDICAL CORPS. The mail tr|in this morning took Captain A. D. Carbery and a squad of the members of' C section, No. 4 Field Ambulance, who go into camp at Seatoiui, Wellington. The men—and boys—seemed to be enjoying themselves. CRICKET STRATFORD v. MANAIA. Stratford played' Manaia und«r untoward weather conditions on Thursday ) at Manaia, but evidently the conditions ] suited the visitors, for they won by 20 runs. Dunlop was the hero of the side, scoring 21 and taking five wickets for 10 runs. Stratford scored 64 and Manaia 44. BRANCH BEATSTTHE TRUNK. . On Thursday afternoon, in response to a challenge received from the head office staff, Mr. Newton King's Stratford staff sent eleven men to Inglewood to play cricket. New Plymouth scored 47 (H. Healy 15, Goldsworthy 11), the bowling honors being divided, by Moore (4 for 17) and East (6 for 30). Stratford's score was 61 (East 17 and Woods 10),' Simpson (6 for 30) and Cutfield (3 for 25) doing the trundling.

Kenrick, S.M., this j morning, Daniel Favier was charged with j driving a waggon through Broadway at 8 o'clock at night without lights, and was fined 10s, with 7s co£ts. ' James Rooney, for taking sand out of the water channelling in Regan street was similarly treated, as was T. Lynch, for riding a bicycle on the footpath in Regan street. Judgment by default was given for plaintiff in the following civil cases:— R. H. Robinson v. H. E. Hight, claim £3 15s lid, costs 19s; G. W. Calvert v. C. , LICENSING COMMITTEE The last quarterly meeting of the Stratford Licensing Committee as at present constituted was held at noon teday. There we** jnresent: Messrs. W. i G. K. Kenrick (chairman), P. F. Ralfe, j D. H. Mac Donald, and H. B. Curtis. Win. j Lovatt (Mr. Croker) applied for a per-1 manent transfer of the license of the Commercial Hotel, Stratford, to Mrs. Nora Sullivan. There being no objection, the application was granted. Bernard McMaaters (Mr. J. R. L. Stanford) applied for a permanent transfer of the license of the Toko Junction Hotel to William Abbott. The application was granted, there being no objection. Police reports on all hotels in the district were satisfactory. Sergeant McNeely presented a special report on the progress being made with the re-erection of the Whangamomona Hotel. The contractor was making rapid progress, despite the difficulty of securing carpenters and material for the chimneys. It was expected that the bar, dining-room, sitting-room, and some of the bedrooms would be ready for occupation by May Ist,-and if the weather conditons were good, the whole building Might* be ready by then, for the builders ?rer« working long hours. iThe chairman suggested to the sergeant that the police should give notice as soon, as possible to licensees where! improvements were necessary, for then 1 the licensees , would be able to have the work done befor3* the annual meeting instead of only promising then to have it done. If reasonable requests of the police were not carried out, and it became necessary to adjourn' the meeting of the committee to some future date in order to grant the license when the work hnd been done, he had the prow&r —-and he had exercised it bnly recently —to order the'licensee to pay the cbsts of the'adjournment. - " , ' Mr. Kenrick also had a word to say to counsel. In both cases where applications were made the solicitors produced varioiis papers, but neither produced the license of the premises in respect of which" the application was made. His Worship required that these should always be produced, otherwise the com-

mittee had no knowledge that a license was in existence. He knew that an undertaking could be obtained that the license would be produced to the clerk without delay so that the endorsement of transfer could be made, but he had known a ease in which the license, thus promised; had not been produced for four months. The present applications Would be granted if the clerk believed the licenses would be forthcoming. Mr. Croker promised to get one in a few minutes, and the other was' promised by Mr.-Stanford for,the morrow. Mr. Bird said he wq.s satisfied, for he had handled the licenses qiiite recently, and the applications were granted.
PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH.
EAST EGMONT MISSION. The quarterly meeting of the officials of the East Egrnont Mission l was held at Douglas on Wednesday, the Eev. B. Metson presiding over a good attendance. The mission is in the charge of the Rev. Mr. Frost. Reports from all the places in ,the district were of a, highly satisfactory nature as regards the work, and the finances were also satisfactory, there being a very. small deficit. Two new . members were added *to the roll. Special interest attached to the garden party in the afternoon at Mr. Seed's home. People came from many miles to be present, and in between the showers the delights of open-air games were fully enjoyed, finishing up at about 5.30 with a splendid tea provided by the ladies of the mission utider the super- j vision of Mr. and Mrs, Seed. In the evening an open-air concert was to have been held. _ Arrangements had been made to light up the grounds with acetylene light, and Chinese lanterns were hung about,, whilst seats were, judiciously placed at intervals. But the l weather upset all calculations, and the : concert had to be held indoors. Mr. J. ; B. Hine, M.P., was present, and in the course of a neat speech said that although a Church man he took a keen interest in ■ and was always glad to assist in the work Of Christianity done hv other sects. The concert was an excellent one, and was followed by an equally excellent supper, the fame of the Douglas housewives being much en- j hanced thereby. - | THE QUARTERLY MEETING. I
The quarterly meeting of the Stratford circuit was held at Cardiff on Thursday, the Rev. Metson presiding. There was a good gathering of church officials from various parts of the circuit. The reports showed that solid work had been done during the quarter, but the finances had not improved, the deficit at the commencement of the quarterly period having inereassed slightly. Two new members were added to the roll. Arrangements were made for carrying out the' referendum of church members upon the question of union with the Methodist Church. Meetings ' will be held next week, at Stratford on Tuesday and at other centres on the following evenings. Church members of 18 years tof age and over, and of twelve months' standing are entitled to a vote, which must be registered at one of these meetings, and the results of the voting must be in the hands of the union secretary, Mr. 0. In the evening the annual Cardiff tea in aid pf the church funds drew a- very large attendance, and the. tea, was up to the usual Cardiff standard, which says much.
