WAITARA BOROUGH COUNCIL

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The ordinary meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held oh Wednesday evening. Present: Mr. W- F. Jenkins (Mayor), Crs. Tate, Langman, Black, Klenner and Elliot. Mr. Elliot, after making the usual declaration, took his seat at the Council table. The Mayor welcomed Cr. JElliot. as a member, as did the other councillors present. Mr. C. H. Tate thanked the councillors for having appointed him borough vlerk and treasurer.

The foreman's monthly report was read, also the waterworks overseer's report, which stated that several connections had been made during the month, including a 'Bin. main into the freezing works. ■ ,» .

Mrs. Mercer applied to have her property connected with the water supply, her residence being six chains from the main.—Application granted on condition that the borough will laj r two chains, of piping only, but. should other residents living between, Mrs. Mercer and the present main wish to be connected, Mrs. Mercer would be reimbursed accordingly. The district health officer wrote, stating that the borough should take more precautions with rubbish that was deposited at the depot.—Referred to Works Committee.

Messrs. Borthwick & Sons .wrote, asking that West Quav, from the railway crossing to Stafford sfet, be put in better repair.—Left in the hands of the Works Committee, with power to act. Mr. G. F. Prosser wrote, asking the Council to assist him in the water difficulty near his property in Strange street. Referred to Works Committee to report.

Mr. W, J. Russell', New Plymouth, wrote asking the Council to hire to him the grader for a few days for work at the, new hospital site.—The grader is at present V...t of order.

Messrs. Borthwick &■ Sons applied for a refund of £lO 25s 3d, being rate* paid by them on land they did not occupy.—Refund granted. A letter was received from the Tara•nalji County Council, stating that the Council would not contribute towards the bridge over the Waitara river at Waitara.—The Mayor stated that the Taranaki County would not contribute unless the New Plymouth Borough were, also cited.—Cr. Tate stated that the county would be willing to pay £l2 per annum if the New Plymouth Borough did likewise.

The clerk' was instructed to call tenders for casting for ensuing year; also to write off certain rates and rents that have been outstanding for some time. Mr. J. Coleman asked for Is per yard on metal supplied, which has been held back. He stated that, the metal' was delivered where the foreman instructed.— Referred to the foreman for confirmation.

Mrs. Fitzherbert thanked the Council for letter of condolence re death of her husband.

Authority was given Mr. C. H. Tate, the Mayor and Crs. Klenner and Langman to sign cheques on behalf of the borough. The engineer was instructed to call tenders for earthwork and metalling in Craycroft street, tenders to close next Council meeting. The Mayor informed the Council that Mr. C. H. Tate, the newly appointed clerk, could not act as returning officer for the borough until he obtained his majority, and Mr. Buchanan was appointed to act in the meantime. Cr. Elliot asked when the metal in Paris street was going to be blinded. The engineer, who was present, was instructed to have the crossings blinded as soon as possible.

The matter of appointing a clerk of works for the new bridge, which was held over from last meeting, was discussed, Cr. Elliot stated that his idea was to appoint a man to look after the concrete work, and when the steel work was commenced a person who thoroughly understood steel work should be apappointed. He recommended that applications be called for the position, as there seemed to be a feeling abroad that things had been cut and dried as to who should have the appointment. It was finally decided to call applications for the position, and a special meeting will be held on the 20th to decide the appointment. Accounts amounting to £658 Ms 8d were passed for payment.

Cr. Birdling was unable to be present at the Boron;;!) Council meeting, he having been thrown from a horse, sustaining slight injuries.
