PUBLIC WORKS.
I GOVERNMENT SYSTEM UPHELD. ,"" ■' By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.' In commenting on the success attend- ) ant on the construction of the new offices for the Upper Hutt Town Board, the v; Hon. R. MeKenzie, Minister for Pub- , lie Works, said that if a strong argument „, were wanted in favor of'the Government system of carrying out public works bj day labor he could not do better than quote the Hutt experience, the building being finished for £IOO less than the' lowest tender. In a recent tunnelling undertaking the lowest tender for the job, said the Minister, was £34,000, and the Government engineer's estimate was £22,000. The Government decided on day labor, and now that the job was nearly finished he anticipated that the cost would be £2OOO or £3OOO less than the engineer's estimate.
