THE MISSING HIMITANGI.
THE GERTIE RETURNS TO-DAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The anxiety regarding the steamer Himitangi, which should have returned from the Chathams in the middle of last month, increases, but it is still felt by experienced shipmasters that if she has gone ashore her crew are quite safe. The steamer Gertie, which has left to search for the Himitangi, was due at Waitangi last Saturday, and the Amokura should reach there to-night or early to-morrow. If the Himitangi's crew are safe, they should reach Wellington by the Gertie to-morrow or Wednesday. The Prime Minister, in accordance with a request made to him yesterday by the Chatham Island Fishing Company, has communicated with the naval authorities suggesting that H.M.S. Pioneer, now in Lyttelton, should also be sent to search for the overdue vessel, but so far he has not heard whether she can be spared for that purpose. H.M.S. PIONEER TO SEARCH. Christchurch, Last Night. H.M.S. Pioneer left to-night for the Chathams to assist in the search for the Himitangi.
