PERSONAL.

Mr. J. O'Sullivan, of football fame, is spending a holiday in New Plymouth. Professor Gilruth will take up his Northern Territory duties in March. His position will be similar to that of Governor of a Crown colony.

Mr. Roy Blanchett, an assistant in the Town Clerk's office, leaves- for Stratford on Saturday to take up a position in the Bank of New South Wales.

Captain Newton, until lately harbormaster at New Plymouth, left for Auckland this week. His successor (Captain Holford) arrived at New Plymouth on Wednesday. Mr. Littlejohn, M.A., Tiniaru, has been appointed extra assistant master at the Waitaki High School. Mr. A. K. Anderson (Mataura) has been appointed preparatory master.

Messrs. Bellringer and Moon, delegates from the New Plymouth Fire Brigade, left yesterday for Rotorua to attend the conference of brigades. Mr. Griffiths, of the Fitzroy brigade, leaves to-day.

The Earl and Countess of Morton are passengers by the Moldavia, which arrived at Fremantle on Monday. They are coming on to New Zealand. The Earl, a representative Peer for Scotland, was born in 1844, and in 1877 married the Hon. Helen Ponsonby, daughter of the second Baron de Manley. A New York cablegram reports the death at Seattle of W. Hofins, millionaire manufacturer and capitalist, aged 60. He started life as a laborer in a foundry, and saved enough money to buy a blast furnace. He started rolling mills, and grew to be the wealthiest man on the Pacific coast of America.

The Rev. H. Sharpe, minister in charge of the Primitive Methodist Church at Fitzroy, is leaving shortly to take up a charge at Geraldine. Mr. Sharpe, who will be farewelled next Monday, is to be succeeded by the Rev. James Charteris, of Dunedin. Mr. Charteris was at one time known as the "boy preacher," having commenced to preach at the early age of eleven years. «. M r i { J-, Hl HoveU ' late in the Ist Manchester Regiment, and second son of the late Dean HoveU, of Napier, died at sea recently of heart failure on the voyage from Shanghai to Singapore. He served as lieutenant in the Third New Zealand Contingent in South Africa and afterwards joined the Manchester! with which regiment he was stationed in India. Resigning his command, be followed mining pursuits in South Arica, and subsequently went farming in British Columbia, eventually settling i n Shanghai. ° A Nelson wire states the Diocesan Synod has been sitting in camera for the past couple of days deliberating on the election of a bishop in succession to the Right Rev. Dr. Mules, resigned. It was announced to-night that the Synod had unanimously decided upon the election of the Very Rev. William Charles Sadlier, canon at Melbourne Cathedral, whose acceptance is now being awaited. It is understood that Canon Sadlier had expressed hie willingness to be nominated. The bishop elect was ordained to the diaconate in 1891 and the priesthood in 1892 by the Bishop of Melbourne. He was vicar of Bendigo parish up to 1904, when he was appointed canon of Melbourne. He was also lecturer on theology at St. John's College and Ridley College, Melbourne. Canon Sadlier i*s understood to be a churchman ef the broad school.
