EMPIRE PICTURE. PALACE. "THE T'WO ORPHANS." The superb selection of pictures shown ' on Saturday and again last night will be repeated to-night for the last time. Tomorrow night the great Selis masterpiece, "The Two Orphans," and it is interesting to read the London Daily Mail on this "star" as follows"America is admittedly the land of great things, and in regard to kinematography its manufacturers play second fiddle to those of no other country. One always expects something big from a land noted for doing everything on a stupendous scale, but we must confess that we were somewhat astounded at the magnificence ?L t sta £K an< } mounti ng of Selig's The Two Orphans,' a three-reel subject, which was released on December 3 In ' it the redoubtable W. N. Selig has given us one of the most ambitious jicturesever produced in America. It if an old ' cry with the legitimate theatres that the picture show is ruining their exchequers. We admit that there is some truth in the complaint. Nor is the issue of such stupendous, masterpieces of acting and photographic quality as 'The Two Orphans undoubtedly is not likely to make that complaint any less severe. Were we the owners of such a home of melodrama as London's Xyceum, there is but one thing we should fear—the exhibition of this picture within a mile of our theatre. It is, m fact, a veritable Lyceum thriller produced with the lavish hand of a Beerbolim Tree, in a series of pictures which for quality, photographically, will turn many kinematographers green with envy. The stage settings and costumes are superb, and in scene after scene one i can almost imagine oneself transported to Drury Lane or His Majesty's, and admiring the effects of such master hands as those of a Collins or a Tree. There is an indescribable charm about the picture, for the.more one sees of it, the more one wishes to see, and it is not too vnuch to say that wherever it is shoAfti the picture-loving public will find, them'selves returning again and again to witness it." —London Daily Mai]. Thjs magnificent picture will be shown at the Empire Theatre on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. s . EAST END SHOW. An excellent topical film showing various scenes in connection with the late tramway strike in Wellington will be screened by the Royal Pictures at the East End Bathing Reserve to-niorrow (Wednesday) night.
