A number of wholesale merchants declared that they dealt largely in the Colonial Company's sugar, and the profit \vas practically nil. The sugar duty was generally condemned. In contradiction of a witness, the chairman declared that the evidence from North Queensland stated that the country was suitable for nothing bat sugar. Rice, cotton and dairying had been tried, and failed.
