The Tyser liner, Muretai, which recently loaded here, if unable to complete her cargo in Wellington may come back to Gisborne to fill her hatches. In the meantime the Star of Scotland is nowloading wool and tallow at Gisborne, and is being held to see whether she has to take Gisborne meat or not. FATAL ROCKET EXPLOSION. Auckland, Tuesday. An unexpected explosion of a ship's rocket on the stranded steamer Knight of St. George at Nukualofa killed Norman Middkton and seriously injured W. Keefe, recent arrivals from Auckland. MOTOR CYCLIST FINED. Napier, Tuesday. r As a. sequel to the recent recordbreaking performance, in which J. L. Braithwaite motor-cycled from Wellington to Napier in a little over six hours, the cyclist was before the court o* a charge of furious riding. Evidence was given that defendant waa travelling between 30 and 40 miles an hour, but defendant said that he did not consider this a dangerous speed. The Magistrate, however, held a different opinion, and imposed a fine of £5 and costs. ADULTERATED PEPPER. Napier, Tuesday. For selling pepper containing a quantity of starch the manager of the Farmers' Co-operative Association was fined £5 and costs. The Magistrate said that the public paid high enough prices for groceries and were entitled to protection. FIRE ON A STEAMER. Wellington, Tuesday. Shortly before 0 o'clock this morning a fire broke out in No. 1 hold of the coastal steamier Queen of the South, i which was lying at the Queen's Wharf. The, fire was suppressed before much damage was done: It originated in a small quantity of flax waste required for the steamer's use. A number of wooden cases, containing tins of kerosene and benzine were charred.
