ALLEGED GAMBLING HOUSE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Wellington/ Friday. As a sequel to a raid on a house in Haining street last night a Chinese, named Wong Noo, was to-day fined £25, or six weeks in gaol, for keeping a common gambling house. Two Europeans, Thomas Holt and James West James, were (fined £2 for being found on the premises.
AN UNUSUAL CHARGE. Hokitika, Friday. An unusual charge was before the Magistrate's Court to-day, the holder of a publican's license being charged with also being a member of a firm of auctioneers. Counsel for the defence stated that he was not a member. The Magistrate stated that no offence was disclosed under the Act, and that he had no jurisdiction, the subject being entirely for consideration by the Licensing Committee. He dismissed the charge.
THE WEST COAST FATALITY. Hokitika, Friday. Large search parties continue'looking for the victims of the Big Wanganui fatality, by which a clergyman and his sister were drowned, but so far without success.
