OUR INCREASING POPULATION

Wellington, Last Night. The estimated population on December 31st last, exclusive of Maoris (49,844) and Cook Islanders (12,598), was 1,025,406. This is an increase for. the twelve months of 21,020, or 2.09 per cent., made up of excess of births over deaths 16,820, excess of arrivals over de< partures 4200.

Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on December 31, 1911, was estimated to be 2603, of whom 95 were females.

Excluding Maoris, the population increased by 21,020, or at the rate of 2.09 per cent, during the year. To this increase the excess of births over deaths contributed 16,820, and excess of arrivals over departures 4200. The birth rate for the Dbminibn in 1911 was 25.97 per 1000 of the mean population, and the death rate 9.39, as against 26.17 and 9.71 respectively in

I\\ deaths in 1911 (9534) were less than the number registered in 1910 (9639) by 105, and the rate per 1000 fell from 9.71 to 9.39.

The number of marriages (exluding those contracted between Maoris)" solemnised in 1911 is estimated at 8800, giving a rate of 8.67 per 1000 of the mean population, against 8236 and 8.30, the actual number and rate in 1910.
