Islay McOwan, Inspector-General of Police, will succeed Mr. W. Telfer Campbell as British resident in Tonga

A Brisbane wire states that Professor J. J. Stables, of England, has been appointed lecturer in English, French and German at the Queensland University. Mr. A. iP. Dryden, Chief Postmaster at New Plymouth, who is at present on sick leave* leaves by the Rarawa this evening en route to Sydney for a short holiday. During his absence, Mr. Stevens Assistant-Inspector of Post Offices, will be relieving.

The Rev. P. Tales, recently of Invercargill, who has been appointed to the pastorate of the local Baptist Church, in succession to the Rev. J. Laird,, now an Aus.tr.alia, will arrive by the mail train this .evening. He will be tendered a welcome 60cial on Tuesday evening. _ Mr. J. S. Bond, who occupied the position of Mayor for four years at Hamilton, was tendered a complimentary social by leading business men on Tuesday evening, and a presentation was made on the eve of his leaving for a trip to England. Mr. Bond was previously four times Mayor of Cambridge. The death is announced at Orepuki of Mr. Alexander Love, one of the Gabriel Gully pioneers. He arrived at Port Chalmers in 1861. At the outbreak of the Dunstan rush Mr. Love was the first to ascend the Clutha with a whaleboat to the Beaumont. He next turned his attention to the country around Kaitangata. Opening a mine at Coal Point, and subsequently at Kaitangata, he was the first to sell a ton of coal from the now famous seam. For a considerable time Mr. Love settled down at Saddle Hill, near Mosgiel. The rush to Criffel found him once more panning out washdirt from the "Salvation Claim," at i Criffel. Denniston, of the West Coast, numbered Mr. Love among its miners for j a time, and then, in 1891, a home was made at Orepuki. He took part in the jubilee celebrations at Lawrence last year.
