MANY NEW FACES.

A CHANGED PARLIAMENT. "NOTABLE AffiRIVAiLS AND DEPARTURES."

It would be assumed on the first glance that the new House of Representatives which will meet on Thursday will contain more fresh faces than is usual at the beginning of Parliament (says the Wellington Times). But scrutiny of the lists shows that the previous Parliament was more packed with political tyros. It contained twenty-eight of them, whereas the present Parliament has twenty-five "new hands." No fewer than fourteen are in the Opposition ranks, while the Laborites and Independents, with one exception, have never before been in Parliament.

Sir William Steward, the father of Parliament, will be missed from the place he filled for over thirty years, and among other veterans who did not seek re-election are Mr. T. Parata, formerly the Southern Maori member (who is appropriately succeeded by his son), Mr. Frank Lawry, who had been in Parliament since 1887, Mr. John Graham, who had represented Nelson for eighten years, and Mr. C. Hall, who had a record of the same length as Waipawa's representative. The fortune of battle put out other veterans, notably (Mr. C. A. C. Hardy, Selwyn's representative for twelve years and chief Opposition whip in the last Parliament; Mr. J. F. Arnold, who carnn into Parliament in 1889 and acted for many years as chairman of the Labor Bills Committee, industrial legislation of the greatest importance to the Dominion having been considered during his chairmanship; and the veteran Radical, Mr. A. W. Hogg, who had been eleven years in the House. LIST OF THE " COLTS."

The new faces to be seen are:— H, Atmore (Nelson). W. H. D. Bell (Wellington Suburbs). R. F. Bollard (Raglan). J. H. Bradney (Auckland West). H. M. Campbell (Hawke's Bay). R. J. M. Coates (Kaipara).
