■MAORI ELECTION APPEAL. By Tel«graph—Press Association. Gisborne, Thursday. A special court, consisting of Messrs.] Barton, McCarthy, and: Dyer, magistrates at Oisborne, Napier and Eotoiua respectively, is sitting at Port Awanui to investigate the allegation of a petition protesting against the Horouta Maori licensing poll. Legal points are reßetrved, and the court is now hearing evidence as to the alleged irregularities in connection with the initiatory proceedings to have the poll taken. PATE A SHIPPING CHARGES. Eltham, February 8. The Retailers' Association reso»vcd to protest against increased freights being charged by shipping companies trading to Patea. It is stated that the increases in some cases equal 50 per cent., quite out of proportion to the increased cost of handling cargo. A TELL TALE HAT. Auckland, Thursday. ; Hund Bergmann, a wharf worker, was giving evidence in couK in a case a few days ago when Detective Powel identified the hat Bergmann carried in his hand as one of six dozen which disappeared from i the steamer Maheno in Decemher last. Bergmann appeared this morning chatfged with the theft of 68 felt hats, valued at £23, the property of Macky, Logan, Caldwell and Co. The hats were of a quality that could not have been otherwise obtained in Auckland. Bergmann pleaded not guilty, but admitted that he got four hats in the coal amongst the Maheno's cargo. He was committed for trial and admitted! to bail in Lis own bond for £IOO and two sureties for £SO each.
