At the Police Court to-day, Mr. Cutten gave judgment in the cases of James Ernest McCarthy and Joseph Brown, who were charged with betting at Ellerslie on January 1. Both were convicted and fined £2O each. MOTORIST CHARGED WITH 'MANSLAUGHTER. Ohristehurch, Last Night. The sequel to the Cathedral Square motor car fatality took place this afternoon at the Magistrate's Court before Mr. S. A. Bailey, S.M., when Reginald Blundien was charged that at Christchurch on January 19 he unlawfully caused the death of Thos. Ryan, and thereby committed the crime of manslaughter. Accused pleaded not guilty, and reserved his defence. He was committed for trial, bail of £IOO being allowed. A WOULD-BE SUICIDE. Christchurch, Last Night. Robt. Wm. Joseph Difl'en, a young man, on remand was charged with attempting to commit suicide at Riccarton on January 30 by strangling himself with his tie. He had previously pleaded guilty. He was committed! and discharged, having been seven days in- gaol already. The Magistrate remarked that the trouble was caused by drink, and he hoped the case would be a warning to accused. FLAXMILINO INDUSIRY. Palmerston North, Last Night. A meeting of the Manawatu Flax Millers' Association was held to-day. The resolutions "carried at the half-yearly meeting of the Employees' Union regarding complains of the swamp hands were considered, and it was decided to inform the union that a general meeting of millers would be held at Foxton on' Monday next. The decision then arrived at would be conveyed to the union later.
