FIRES.

OUTBREAK AT PETONE MILLS. ' By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. »At six o'clock last night a fire broke out in the drying room of the Petone Woollen Mills and completely consumed the contents, principally dyed wool. Prompt aetion by the sons of the manager, Mr. Ramsden, who were a little later assisted by the fire brigade, prevented the fire from spreading. The [damage is estimated at only £IOO.

BOARDING-HOUSE GUTTED. Rotorua, Tuesday. The Rocky Nook boarding-house was partially gutted by fire this morning. There was very little furniture in the part affected and it was saved. 1 The building, which was old, was owned .by James Vaughan and occupied by J. Coleman, was insured in the Sun Fire Office for £l9O and the furniture in the •Phoenix for £420. Only two boarders occupied the portion burnt.

SECOND DEATH AT GRANITY. Westport, Tuesday. -The fire at Granity was responsible f»r a second death. Mr. James Martin, licensee (who was burnt in endeavoring to rescue papers), died in the Westport hospital this morning. The inquest showed that when Hopkins {the first victim) was put to bed he was not quite sober. Most of the inmates lost I nearly all their belongings. ' The insurances on the building, which was owned by Mrs. Watson, were £IOOO in the State Office, in the Standard Office; on the stock and furniture, £350 in the Commercial Union; also £2OO in the same office on the private furniture or Mrs. Martin.

| BLAZES IN GISBQRNE. f Gisborne, Last Night. _ A fire destroyed a five-roomed. dwelling in Stout street, owned by Mrs. Jennings and occupied by H. Stevenson, this evening. Stevenson was hanging pictures and knocked over a lamp owing to the step-ladder falling. This caused the I blaze. Nothing was saved. The furniture was insured for £175. The insurance on the house is unascertainable. J.wo hours previously a fire destroyed a wash-house at the rear of premises in Wellington street. The damage is estimated at £25. The house was saved bv the prompt action of Constable Johnston m getting a hand reel to -work.
