NEW WAITARA BRIDGE.

DEPUTATION TO CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL. The matter' of an adjustment of accounts in connection with the proposed new bridge over the Waitara river, at Waitara, was introduced at the Clifton County Council meeting yesterday afternoon by a deputation from the Waitara Borough Council, consisting pf Messrs. W. F. Jenkins (Mayor), A. Klenner, and T. Buchanan (town clerk). The points in dispute have been referred to by a previous deputation, and yesterday's deputation expressed hope that an amicable settlement would be arrived at. In the diseussion which followed several councillors contended that the items of expenditure, viz., the cost of keeping the bridge clean, estimated at £52,, upkeep (£25) and clerical work (£25), should be borne toy the Waitara Borough Council. ;

In defending the Borough Council's advocacy of a proportionate share of the amounts, Mr. Buchanan, said the proposed basis was a fair one. In the opinion of Cr. Sanders, the question should be referred to the Council's solicitor.

It was stated by the chairman that the Taranaki County Council had got off very lightly, as its share of the upkeep was only £l2.

In order to bring matters to a head, Cr. O'Sullivan, who was seconded by Cr. Bowers, moved that the Clifton County Council offer the Waitara Borough £IOO as its contribution. As an amendment Cr. Sanders moved that the matter be deferred until such time as the Council .had received the opinion of its solicitors. The amendment, which was seconded by Cr. Kennington was lost, only the proposer and seconder voting in its favor. In reference to another point it was decided, on the motion of Cr. Sander,,seconded'by Or. Kennington, that the'Nga-, timaru riding be exempted from payment of interest on the bridge account. A further resolution was passed to the effect that the Borough Council'be 1 requested to petition-' 1 the' Government to include the Awakino County amongst the -contributors to the cost of the proposed structure, and in the event, of such an agreement the Clifton County's contribution be lessened in consequence!
