A London cablegram states that the court will observe five weeks' mourning for the Duke of Fife.

Mr. John Bain Jack, of Wanganui, has been appointed a judge of the Native Land Court, as from February Ist. Mr. R. B. Ross, ex-M.P, for Pahiatua, is to receive a presentation in recognition of his services to the district.

Mr. T. R. Mowat, manager of the- Bank of New Zealand at liunterville, has been promoted to the charge of the Ashburton branch.

Mr. W. D. Ly,snar, ex-Mayor of Gis-1 borne, whose health has been somewhat precarious of late, contemplates leaving for England in March. A London cable • states that ex-King Manuel of Portugal and Don Miguel, pretender to the throne, met at Dover, and have been reconciled. Don Miguel has offered to help Manuel's restoration. Mr. James Hislop, principal private secretary to the Prime Minister, has .been appointed under-secretary for Internal Affairs, the position rendered vacant by the death of Mr. Hugh Pollen.—Wellington wire.

Mr. R. A. Wright, ex-member for Wellington South, was entertained at a social gathering on Thursday evening, and presented by the electors with an eight-day clock. He also received a presentation of specimens of native grass clothing from Cook Island white residents, as an appreciation of the able,and fearless manner in which he had dealt with the Cook Island matters in Parliament.

Mr,. H.' Okey, M.P., leaves by the mail train on Tuesday morning to attend a Reform Party demonstration to be held at Te Kuiti on There will be.a garden party in the afternoon and a banquet in the evening. Mr. Massey and other prominent members of the party will be present. Mr. Okey will leave on his return by the Main Trunk express immediately after the banquet, arriving in New Plymouth on Thursday evening.
