ENTERTAINMENTS

NEW PLYMOUTH AT THE SEASIDE. DEPICTED AT THE EMPIRE THEATEE. New Plymouth saw itself at the seaside last night in the Empire Theatre, and was very pleased that it looked so charming. As was duly announced, Mr. G. Saunders and his staff got very busy at-.the recent picnic and obtained some astonishingly good records, which were shown last evening. The management were obliged to turn a very large number of people away, but as the local pictures will be shown for several more nights, the disappointed ones will-have a chance of seeing themselves as others see them. The with every phase 'of the picnic from the bun, lollie and treacle scrambles to an excellent moving panoramic record of New Plymouth in the water. The film showing local youths battling for first place on the greasy boom created immense amusement, particularly as every contestant seemed to be known by every person in the audience. The intimacy* of the records appealed to everyone. "Did you see Billy L f '"'There's Jack P—-!" "My word, that's-. Mabel!" were among the hundreds of delighted exclamations heard in the audience. Mr. Saunders,' the reason of the picture, stalked majestically in the background and smiled, and when the record took in the good-humored and good-looking crowd that lined tKe beach, everybody eagerly, scanned the pictures for faces that they knew. The excellent series showing the production of a paper .was hailed with ! acclamation, particularly as the subject was local. A glimpse of the gentlemen who help to forjm public opinion in Taranaki was hailed with the greatest delight, and the more mechanical portion, (which appeals much more to a public which does not give the matter a great deal of thought as long as the boy does not forget to leave the paper) was followed with deep interest. The local pictures, which were beautifully toned were produced with the greatest clearness ; and are a distinct credit to the Empire picture Proprietary. As usual the many films, dramatic, scenic and comic furnished an entertainment having no superior of its kind in New Zealand. The public of New Plymouth are now eomplotelv recognising this fact, as better pictures succeed "ood ones. The studios of the world are V sacked for pictures so that New Plv- : mouth may be amused, and the new idea of screening in perfection the activities of people on the spot adds an entirely novel interest to the Empire Pictures. ' ine world and his wife are more interested m personal matters than in any other matter. It is impossible for anyone to forget that lie has been "eauriit" m action by the living picture camera, or todenv that supreme interest is taken by him and anyone who knows him in the result, Tt adds a new spice to life
