CANADA AND AUSTRALIA.
TRADE AGREEMENT WANTED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Ottawa, January 28. Mr. Foster, Minister of Trade and Commerce, is making overtures to Australia for the establishment of a trade agreement. He will ask for the reduction of the Australian tariff on the fol-: lowing articles: Agricultural implements, ammunition, boots, shoes, metal manufactures, textiles, apparel, vehicles, bicycles and motors. Mr. Ross, Commissioner in Australia, reported that the Australian Government was preparing to consider a tariff arrangement. Mr. Foster is prepared to go as a special representative to Australia to endeavor to conclude an agreement. FEELING IN AUSTRALIA. Melbourne, January 29. Mr. Fisher, referring to the cablegram on Canadian reciprocity, said the Commonwealth Government wanted to meet the Canadian representative and talk over the matter. Until they understood one another he could not discusg the terms of reciprocity. Mr. Tudor stated that he had received no communication from Canada. Mr. Foster's proposed visit would be welcome, and would greatly, facilitate the preliminaries. Personally he thought the Commonwealth Government was unlikely to giant preference on any articles wherein a profitable trade had been built up by means of the tariff. If they could promote trade with injury or with mutual benefit, it would be a spletidid thing.
