INDUSTRIAL UNREST
LOCKING-OUT. A MENACE TO TRADE UNIONISM. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 29, 10 p.m. London, January 29. The General Federation of Trades Unions, in their quarterly report, protest against the general lock-out which the cotton employers had hurled every time a local movement was made towards better wages and conditions. This was a menace to trades unionism. If the owners were justified in their action in this-respect, trades unions were justified in striking over the whole country when an emplgjer discharged a man for being a trades unionist. The unions were not likely to adopt this policy, as it would compel them to strike in some countries weekly. THE MINERS' TROUBLE. PROFITS OF SHAREHOLDERS. Received 29, 12.15 a.m. London, January 29. Coal-owners and miners are considering the joint committee's report, the chance of a compromise being hopeful. A pamphlet issued by the miners states that the average profit on ordinary shares in ninety-two leading coal companies has been 9.0 per cent, annually for a period of thirteen years. GLASGOW DOCKERS' STRIKE. Loudon, January 28. Glasgow dockers unanimously resolved not to resume work on Monday, under conditions which the executive of the union arranged with the masters, with a view to bringing Glasgow into line with Dundee and Liverpool. The strikers are communicating with other ports, with a view to a sympathetic strike. LABOR CONFERENCE. ABOLITION OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. Sydney, January 20.
