EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held last evening, when there were present: Messrs. H. Trimble (chairman), Adlam, Hakoznbe, Kennedy, Morton, Rev. McArthur, Rogers, and Young. Mr. Masters, the new member (vice Mr. Cargill, resigned), forwarded an apology, as he is away from the Dominion. TRUANT OFFICER'S REPORT. Mr. A. Hooker, truant officer, reported that during the year 140 notices were served to parents, reminding them of the irregular attendance of their children at school. Forty-nine summonses were issued against parents who had J failed to keep their children regularly 1 at school after being warned, 44 being convicted and fined,, the fines amounting to £7 7s. Five cases were withdrawn through- sickness and oth'er causes. The Compulsory Full Attendance Act came into force from the beginning of 1011, which has effected an increase in the average attendance. Another cla.us'e in the amended Act. namely, passing the standard exempting attendance from Standard V. to Standard VI., will make a vast difference in the average attendance. Sickness in the early part of. the year affected the attendance, as also did the exceptionally wet spring, but th ! ° mild winter showed a vast improvement on the attendance of several winters past.—Received. resignations! The following resignations wer'e received:—Miss Bent, assistant, Opunake; Miss Powell, head teacher, Awatuna; Miss Hickeyi sole teacher, Douglas; Miss Mclsaac, assistant, Omata; Miss Mace, sole teacher, Ackland; Miss Clausen, note teacher, Denbigh.—Accepted. RECOMMENDATIONS. , The inspectors recommended Mr. D. | D. Thomas for the position of assistant at Inglewood at a salary 'of £IBO a year. ' , APPOINTMENTS. j The chairman reported that owing to a numb«er of vacancies having occurred] that required filling before the schools' re-opened on the sth February, the fol-l lowing appointments had -been made:— Probationers.—Frankley, Miss K. THANKS. ■ Mr. F. A. Reesby wrote on behalf of the settlers-on Radnor road, thanking) the Board for granting a school for that road". A PROTEST. Mr. W. Hood, secretary of the Moa] School Committees' Association, wrote stating that he was instructed to forward a protest against'th'e actioii of the electoral authorities using the schools for election purposes when ' other public buildings are available. ' The ' Kaimata school committee considered that their; school being so used at the lat/e general election had a most damaging effect on their scholars, the annual examination being held at that time. They hoped the Board would forward their protest and assist as far as possible to prevent the practice- becoming habitual. - | WAITARA SCHOOL. The secretary of the Waitara school committee' wr,6te stating that at the last meeting it was decided that a deputation should wait on the Board with the vifew of again laying the matter of erection of the fence round the whole of the school property before the Board, and a deputation will wait on the Board this morning! FITZROY SCHOOL. The secretary of the Fitzroy school committee' nqtified the Board that Mr. V. Arden had been ejected as chairman in place of Mr. E. Lee (resigned). He also acknowledged receipt of the re-ap-pointment of Miss Bollinger as temporary assistant, and Miss Greatbatch as probationer.—Approved. REPORT. The Inspector reported that on going through' jthe!-special manual registers, he found that the; teacliers of some schools had shown a jack of care in making out their returns. .., . ~ ; He ..reported' that the following, six Bchools gained the highest marks "for grounds, premises, etc., during 1911. the schools being placed in order of merit:—' Korito 183, Kaimiro 176. Marco 175, Oaonui 174, Frankley 172, Huiakama 172. It will be seen from the above that the Korito school; which occupies premier position, holds the "Tisch Shield" for the year 1912. The Board adjourned till this morning.
